6 Tips to Save on Your Move

Moving an entire home worth of belongings to a new home can be a pretty overwhelming and expensive task but it doesn’t have to be. Here are some tips to help you save time and money on your next move.

Sweat the Small Stuff

Think of all of those little items you have in your home that you could pack and transport yourself. Things like your small kitchen appliances, shoes, clothing, books and anything else that’s small can be packed in boxes and taken to the new home yourself. This will save you quite a bit of money as these small items add up to big space in a moving truck and extra time for movers to pack and carry.

Make a Few Goodwill Runs

We all have so manyh items at home that we will never use again. This is the perfect time to take all of those items to your local charity. Here in Naples, St. Matthew’s House takes furniture and Goodwill seems to take just about anything! Load up the car and make a few trips to lessen what you have to move.

Save on your Moving Boxes

Boxes run about $3 a piece on average at stores like Home Depot. Instead of paying for your boxes, ask in the buy/sell/trade groups on Facebook if anybody has any. You’d be surprised at how easy they are to find!

Be Careful! Don’t Break Anything!

Anything you break is going to have to be replaced and that can get very expensive! My mother once packed a bottle of olive oil in a box that had my computer printer. I think you know how that story ends!

Fragile items need to be packed with care. Use towels or blankets as free padding in those boxes.

Hire a Bare-Minimum Moving Company

If you have the ability to pack your items on your own and move those boxes to the front door, you could save a lot by hiring a moving crew that only carries items and does not actually box them. You pay these companies by the person, by the hour. Do a lot of the work yoursef and you will certainly cut down on the time the movers are there.

Move Mid-Week

A lot of people don’t know this but many movers will change their hourly rate when moving on a weekend or holiday. After all, that’s when demand is highest. If you can schedule your move for mid-week, you may get a break in the cost!
